This test detects the presence of Mycoplasma genitalium, a relatively new and important sexually transmitted bacterial infection that can cause pelvic inflammatory disease. Chronic infection may lead to tubal-factor infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth and spontaneous abortion. All of these symptoms and conditions can be caused by other STIs, and non-STIs as well, making diagnosis difficult without testing.
